Tenerife - History
Of all the Canaria Islands Tenerife was the only one that resisted to the attempts of conquest from the Spanish.
In 1496 fell under the Hispanic nomination becoming very soon an animated center of commerce. Till then the inhabitants of the island had been the Guanchos, people of North African origins settled in those lands in the 200 a.C. For its geographical situation Tenerife was the pirates perfect aim.
Tenerife was seen as a 2the island to conquer” even by the English. In 1797 they undertook the most famous battle of Santa Cruz Saint during which Nelson the lost his arm. Santa Cruz was declared from Madrid “Capital of the entire archipelago” in 1821.
The century after exactly in 1927 with the division of the Canarias in two provinces it became capital of Tenerife and of the smallest La Palma, Gomera and El Hierro.
Numerous in the course of the years the migrations towards the United States Americas and vice versa. The fusion of cultures also touched gastronomy and the music of the island.
