Canary ... why they are called like that?
Many are the explanations of its name. There are so many stories that try to explain its origin and it is difficult to understand which of several options is the most truthful. The Canary Islands has a special name and the stories that explain its origins are various that anyone can invent.
Let’s illustrate one of the most famous legend: the archipelago name doesn’t find its origin from the “canterini- canary” birds. The birds are so called because they live in these beautiful lands.
Although the origins of the name "Canary" are not certain, one of the most popular legend is that its name comes from the Latin canis (dog). It was Plinio the Old that gave this name to the seven pearls of the Atlantic Ocean especially for the enormous amount of dogs that populated these lands.
The legend narrates that in an expedition ordered by the king of Mauritania to the Fortunate Islands (Canaries today) located over the Straits of Gibraltar, an explorers bump into in a particular kind of dog from which derived the name Insula Canaria or Island of dogs.
The name then was given to the whole archipelago. The dog became a symbol of these volcanic Atlantic areas full of mystery and beauty.
